A policeman is murdered--stabbed during a nuclear protest march in the rain-drenched streets of Eastvale in northern England. Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks works to solve the case and to save his own job endangered when a former colleague from London comes north to direct the inquiries for supposedly political reasons.
