Lorelei is determined to use this opportunity to prove herself and make her wildest, most impossible dream come true: to become a naturalist, able to travel freely to lands she’s only read about. The expedition gets off to a harrowing start when its leader—Lorelei’s beloved mentor—is murdered in her quarters aboard their ship. Secrets that make Lorelei question whether justice is worth pursuing, and if this kingdom is worth saving at all.

To be honest, I expected more from this book. The characters felt somewhat hollow and often seemed to serve as little more than plot devices. The love story between Sylvia and Lorelei felt rushed. The world-building seemed incomplete, and don’t even get me started on the ending. As a German reader, I also found the names off-putting and funny
I rly loved this book sm. It was very well written and the characters were amazing. I loved every second of it. Thanks Allison Saft for this amazing book
3.5 As a german, I need to say that reading this book was a bit annoying. This book is like german-folklore inspired so all the names, places, literally everything were german words. And well, it was annoying to read this mix of english and german. Also, these words were spoiling the story sometimes. What I mean is that I knew what the words for some places meant while the main characters were still trying to figure out what it was. The main reason why I chose to read this book was the sapphic love story and the dark academia vibe (which is perfect for autumn imo). And it wasn't bad but it also wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The plot wasn't one of the best ones I've ever read and the romance was cute but again: not the best thing I've ever read.
I honestly had higher expectations for this book.
reading this as someone whose first language is german is very funny tbh. but besides the random german words the book was rather boring. it didn’t really give enough context, development or time to care for it’s characters and portraits a weird idea of right or wrong considering the end. the end was either just rushed or did ignore the fact that the leaders effectively suppressed their citizens. especially when sylvia fought against the revolution in albe i was very confused. she is portrait as this ethereal queen that is very much connected to nature and she does feel strongly for the wildeleute and almost fights for their rights. but then she wouldn’t fight for her subjects to be freed from the reign of a tyrant as wilhelm… idk something feels off about this. i really hoped to like this but i really didn’t. i need to stress once more that i didn’t care for a single character. they felt like caricatures of the typical good or bad characters and underdeveloped. i don’t want to be a hater but this was a bit disappointing.
